The shoulder is the trickiest joint in the body. It's actually several joints and a lot of muscles performing a balancing act. If one muscle goes out of balance then problems begin. It has great mobility which is the result of a shallow joint, and a shallow joint is highly unstable. What stability it has is provided by muscles rather than the strong ligament straps most other joints have. This makes injury common. Shoulder pain is very common. It's said that shoulder pain is 3rd behind low back pain and neck pain. I think here in Malaysia it's #4, just behind knee pain. About 95% of all shoulder disorders are due to four conditions: Note that three of these four conditions are tendinous in origin, tendons are relatively avascular, all are subject to chronic trauma, micro-tears, slow repair, and aging degeneration. Most tendon damage doesn't require surgery. We also know treatment techniques that are not known to most medical doctors or physiotherapists. Along with tendonitis, many cases of shoulder pain require muscle treatment. Without muscle treatment, the problem doesn't go away. There is more to fixing the shoulder than just ultrasound and massage. Drugs, injections and the rest only cover up the pain. They don't fix the problem underneath.
